WASHINGTON has been ordered to pay $1.7 billion to settle lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who allege that the drug manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., failed to adequately warn consumers of the adverse side effects of celecoxib, the over-the-counter medication for pain, arthritis, and inflammation.
The Justice Department announced the settlement on May 25.
The federal lawsuit was filed by three plaintiffs who claim that Pfizer's marketing of Celebrex "increased the risk of serious side effects from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs" and increased the risk of serious stomach and heart problems, including heart attacks.
The complaint alleged that Pfizer's Celebrex reduced inflammation and reduced the effects of other NSAIDs, including indigestion and heartburn, and that the drug was also responsible for a number of serious side effects. The lawsuit alleges that the company failed to adequately warn consumers of the drug's increased risk of serious side effects, and failed to adequately warn about its use in children, and the potential for serious allergic reactions, including severe asthma, liver problems, and kidney problems.
The complaint alleges that Pfizer failed to provide the required warnings, and failed to warn consumers of the risks associated with its over-the-counter arthritis pain reliever, Celebrex. The complaint alleges that the drug caused serious allergic reactions in children, including asthma, liver damage, and kidney problems.
The three plaintiffs filed a motion for a summary judgment to preclude the government from seeking to recover the $1.7 billion in settlement amounts. Federal court filings do not reflect a final judgment on the amount.
